Lai Po Kan (AKA Kirby Lai) is a photographer from Hong Kong. Before making the photography series of ‘The Mortal Sickness of a Mind’, he worked in the film industry as an assistant production manager, as well as an engineer in the telecommunication field. His passion on art and design makes him moving on to the photography practice.

He graduated with a MA Photography at the University of the West of England. He is currently based in Manchester, UK.

His works are influenced by the movies of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch. His photographs are dramatic and cinematic, with the help of staged lighting, to enhance a suspenseful and darkness feelings. He creates a world of isolation and loneliness.

His works were shortlisted in photography competitions. A photograph from the series ‘The Mortal Sickness of a Mind’ was shortlisted in the British Photography Awards 2022.
